Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the Sun come shining through, for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just smile
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just smile
The song “Smile” was originally composed by Charlie Chaplin. The melody was created as an instrumental piece for the soundtrack of his 1936 film Modern Times. It emerged during a transitional moment in Chaplin’s career. Although he was famous for silent films, this production marked the first time his voice was ever heard on screen. It showed his willingness to explore new forms of cinematic expression.
Chaplin was involved in every aspect of his films. He acted, directed, and produced them. He also composed their musical scores. Modern Times was no exception. He collaborated with arranger Alfred Newman to develop the music that would later become “Smile.” Alfred Newman is the uncle of the well-known composer Randy Newman. This partnership helped transform the instrumental theme into a rich and expressive musical work. It highlighted Chaplin’s artistic versatility. Chaplin was often involved in composing music for his productions.
The inspiration for the film came from the context of the Great Depression. This period spanned from 1929 to 1939. As a result, it shaped the emotional tone behind “Smile”. The economic crisis triggered by the stock market crash left millions facing hardship, creating a widespread sense of despair. In such a climate, works that conveyed hope and optimism became especially meaningful. They offered audiences comfort. These works also encouraged people to persevere despite their circumstances.
